Mr. Anwar Al Said, UNESCO Office Jakarta,
This is a different experience where students and teachers sit together in this room. Important indicator of network of iEARN, it’s made by teacher and students. The challenges in general are facing everybody, teachers are required to work in fashion different from the way they are used to do. After all, for students, there are a lot of challenges are head of you, so be prepared. These days the stories are totally different, for you to face and what we should deliver. We at UNESCO to work closely with the Minister to expand the networks, expand and to have more such meetings with the members then at the end the meetings are the vibrant media to share, contribute and share together about education with the focuses on education, culture and peace and environment. The safeguards of the environments are students and teachers as they are the coherent boy to face challenges through collaborative learning. This meeting is for greater outcomes for the guide in the future. I thank oyu forgiving me the time to address this session and I look forward to hearing the results of the meeting.
Prof. Dr. Arief Rachman, M.Pd, Executive Chairman of Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO
We thank God the Almighty that we are here in this room; I’m happy that who come in this room are not only from Jakarta but also other cities. iEARN is actually by-side the activity of Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO and it’s interlinked with ASPnet, under UNESCO programme. iEARN was looking for institution to work together to develop the projects, this is the collaboration with the US embassy in Jakarta, we don’t receive funding but some facilities. 1000 teachers in Indonesia involved. Four things to focus, environment relating to other subject like physic and biology; human rights and democracy; poverty relating to guidance and counseling; peace, relating to interfaith and intercultural dialogue to keep this workshop in good shape. I congratulate the organizing committee. I hope God will bless us all.
Dr. Fasli Jalal, P.hd, Director-General of Improvement of Teacher’s Quality and Educational Staff
Mr. Fasli congratulates the teachers and gives them big applause for being selected to attend this workshop. Teachers are long-life learners, and they are inspiration for the students, and how their institutions maintain the programme. Indonesia serves 52mio students and has 250,000 schools. Education is the right for everybody. 20% at least from National budget to pay for the right to education. We are now at the period of the budget to increase gradually, we are growing sector. But the question is, how we can manage it. How professional are our teachers? We provide the opportunity to have dignity for the teachers to have better welfare. We cannot expect professional teachers without giving sufficient welfare. Professional development for teachers is critical duty. We have different strategy now to maintain education like we have in iEARN.
You can propose to us your projects and when we agree and sign the MoU, we will send the budget directly to the school’s bank account. Next year the budget will double. Classroom exam research is offered to the participants. Primary and junior high schools, BOS should be used for quality involvement around 10%. While for senior high school the budget is provided around 20%. Furthermore, the Ministry also provides BOMM. He also discusses MGMP issue and the financial support to schools; we also want to make sure that the market is ready, so that the schools can manage the funding accordingly. So many opportunities now to grow professionally, you can start now with individual interest or plan. We are also having national teacher congress that will be attended by 10,000 teachers throughout Indonesia. Thank you for the participation and lets use this workshop. He then officially opens the forum.

She explains her slide, “Lesson plans Project” co-organized project between UNESCO Office Jakarta and UNESCO Office Bangkok (regional office for education).
She further explains about HIV/AIDS epidemics in Indonesia that it has infected people in every province in the country. The target group is young adults, as the number of this group who live with HIV/AIDS is increasing. The vocal point in schools are teachers, it indicates how important their roles in education are.
Some teachers are teaching old-fashionably that really bore the students, so they are looking for something else more interesting, such as browsing in the Internet. To prevent AIDS, we have to start from ourselves. Teachers play important roles in education to achieve global scale through its networks, simply like what iEARN is doing.
She explains about Lesson Plan Competition organized by UNESCO, not only for projects organized in schools or outsides. It’s not only about health issue but also behavioral issue, which covers almost all aspects of life. I hope that what I deliver is meaningful.

Testimony from iEARN teachers and students
3 Teachers
Ms. Hanny, SMA Diponegoro 1
We have the opportunity to know iEARN since April 2007. I luckily got the opportunity to attend international conference of iEARN in Cairo, Egypt. Now my English is better because of iEARN, and I can enrich my materials for teaching; it motivates me to be a better person and finally I can learn a lot for other participants.
Mr. Abu Hurairah, Al Azhar
I’m very thankful that I can share my experience when attending iEARN conference in Egypt. We can learn their lives and also our experiences in learning can be shares on how education should be packaged in global issues; health, human right, etc. When I was among international community, I clearly saw, there is no conflict among them; in relations to universal value.
During the conference, we exchanged our tradition costumes as means communication of peace. That is the impression that I got from the conference. We also performed games by students. Some participating countries were discussion how to bridge cultural gaps among nations. Students are the messenger of peace for the future.
Ms. Raudhati, Riau
She shares her experiences when she first joined iEARN. The benefits are that we can change our mindset when joining iEARN, regarding KTSP, certification and points. Benefit for my students is prestige; I don’t include my students not only in workshop but I asked the facilitators to include my students in their website.
Don’t give students not based on the book but based on the project. I also apply iEARN in classes and I get involved in a lot of iEARN projects.
Questions and Answers Sessions
Ms. Suwinarni, SMAN 8 Yogyakarta, we have problems with our internet connection in our school, so in your school is it used for homework or day-today teaching? (to Ms. Raudhati). We group our students first, then we direct them to particular educative site and offer them to select what kind of projects they want to do, such as essay or article writing. So students can do the assignments in school or at home but we also give them time line when they have to submit their projects. We teach students to see the reality around them first then they dare to dream. After getting involved in the projects, students become more sensitive towards what is going on around them.
Mr. R. Imran Hamid, S.Pd., SMKN 4 Malang. I want to get your opinions and suggestions, what can I do to catch up with your achievement. We have to see people first then we imitate it. I was very impressed when I worked on the project of “My Dream World.” There is also morale value. Ms Hasnah Gasim adds, you have to register first then you get your id and password. In here we evaluate what are the outcomes of joining iEARN.
Ms. Nazirawati, Diponegoro1, Jakarta; some of my students have problems with English, how to encounter this issue. We involved all student from acceleration class and also students from other classes.
3 Students
M. Reza, Labschool Jakarta
He shares his experiences when he attended Natural Disaster Youth Summit in Aichi, Japan. What we got in the Conference is that we work in a team that work in different cultures and social backgrounds in making safety map as well as the knowledge of natural disaster and also particular disaster of each country. The benefits are that we get more friends from around the world and we exchanged souvenirs from our countries. We learn about other cultures and improve international knowledge.
There was once cultural performance during the conference and we have to present our safety map that we made. We obtain knowledge and information that we can share with our friends back in Indonesia after we return. After joining this programme, we share our knowledge with other students, and we come up with an idea to organize workshop on safety map discussion. Safety bag is that a bag in which people can put their valuable belonging when disaster happens.
Sasa, Al Azhar Jakarta
We can share our knowledge and opinions with friends around the world. We can make projects and work together with our project mate. It makes good networking. We learn how to work in team, how to work with teammates, and we can solve problems. We have to be confident and share our experiences. Like my experience in Taiwan 2 years ago, when were wearing veils; there a lot of questions from the students and wee shared a lot about curriculum in Indonesia.
We returned to Jakarta with bringing something, and we have to use iEARN programme properly because it is good for our lives, our futures and ourselves.
Feisal, Alumni of Labschool Jakarta
During my time in Labschool, I joined four international youth conferences. We can get new knowledge and information and we share our experiences with other participants from other countries, we learn and understand other cultures.
Benefits during my high school, is that we can be reliable sources for school works, we can share stories and experiences with our friends. It’s also plus points for my university.

Mr. Adi Sasongko, SMAN 3 Malang; not all teachers want to develop new knowledge for the improvement of their teaching methodology. I see today’s factual condition is that students aare forced to study harder and to participate in more activities. My suggestion is that we can organize iEARN meeting not only in Jakarta but also in other cities.
Mr. Fathur, even if we revitalize the curriculum, we have to have the spirit to go on.
Mr. Imam Nurul, SMAN 1 Mataram. Suggestions for appointment letter for the provincial coordinator for iEARN addressed to the school of the participating teachers; to sustain the existence of iEARN Indonesia, we really have to select very determined teachers to be included in iEARN membership, in order to ensure the sustainable development of iEARN Indonesia.
Mr. Fathur, we can incorporate Project-Based Learning and Learning Circle as templates to convince donors to give assistant grants to our projects. We have mechanism to find out the funding structures. We need to work together among iEARN teachers to make sure our projects’ sustainability.

Internet is a window to the world, for this purpose, iEARN Indonesia creates a website for iEARN members in Indonesia, which is supported by iEARN USA, UNESCO Office Jakarta, Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO. The address is: www.iearnindonesia.org
The contents of the website is similar to iEARN themes itself: culture, peace, health and environment. He then shows the official website of www.iearn.org and goes through its links and explains the features of the website to the participants.
Mr. Latief, SMAN 5 Surabaya
iEARN in SMAN 5 Surabaya is what we have done in our school in line with the tagline of ASPnet, think globally and act locally. What we have done are world heritage, world costume around the globe, fight against drugs, music around the world,
He shows pictures of the activities done in his school by the teachers and the students. He also mentions that the time frame doesn’t match the action plan. I also encourage other teachers to work together to implement iEARN projects in our school, but the problem is that we don’t have time for discussion with the students.
