Closing

By: Ms. Hanny Atie Sumarni

MC, Ms. Dwi leads the closing.

Ms. Ira gives evaluation on the programme. She congratulates the spirit and motivation of the participants of the workshop. This is very special by the participants because they are willing to attend the workshop; even it is organized on Sundays. I hope that this can be a way for future development. I also feel honorable to be able to facilitate this workshop. Other facilitators and I are also learning in here and we hope that w still can share what can still collaborate.

Ms. Hasnah Gasim, encourages the participants to work in team – team teaching. Learning groups are done in school to get the sense of collaboration. In iEARN we have online collaborative learning. Like what we did in Bumikarsa Hotel, we evaluated the work of iEARN Indonesia. There are some difficulties that are faced by iEARN members, that is way we need constructive ideas to develop further the work of iEARN Indonesia. Teachers have to be not only teachers but we have to be also social leaders. We are now also working on Youth Community Service and we are going to involve Diponegoro in this programme. What you have achieved is not just easily gone; it should be given back in return.

The MC gives the floor to the Chairperson of the Foundation, Mr. Imam Parikesit to deliver speech and close the workshop.

Mr. Imam Parikesit forwards the greetings from Prof. Dr. Arief Rachman, MPd. to the participants. I want to flash back to three years ago – what was the current condition of Diponegoro at that time. How many teachers can operate computer, and it was only 15% of the teachers. Then I came up with the initiative to give the computer course to the teachers as well as how to use the Internet. Then the percentage increased to 80%, and nowadays it is 100% of our teachers can operate computer. Now, the condition is that every teacher has computer. Some teachers suggest that each class to be equipped with LCD projector, but it will require a lot of investment. We were using blackboard and chalks in class, but then I asked the teachers to use LCD projector.

This year we bought SMS (Sistem Management Sekolah) – School Management System. I am happy today because we have now the access to worldwide programmes through iEARN website and forum. This is a development. I will monitor in the coming months, what we will be improving. My position term is nine months left and I will optimize what I can do in the last nine months of my position as the chairperson of the foundation. I thank you for your participation and I hope we can get something out of this workshop. We are nothing without synergy. I also hope that Diponegoro can be more developed day after day. I hope the programme certificate will be very beneficial. By saying Alhamdulillah, I officially close this workshop.

MC reminds to keep in touch within iEARN network through the mailing list and the iEARN Forum. She also asks Mr. Darwono to lead the participants to pray to God for the fruitful results of the workshop.

Mr. Darwono leads the participants for the moment of silence.

Report of the Organizing Committee, Ms. Hanny (SMA Diponegoro), welcomes the participants to the workshop. We take the theme because the benefits or iEARN is a lot, which we will explore further in this two-day workshop. The participants who subscribed to the Workshop is around 26 teachers from 6 units of Diponegoro Rawamangun and Cakung.

Welcoming Speech by the Chairperson of Indonesian National Commission of UNESCO, Prof. Dr. Arief Rachman, M.Pd. Please let me to stand up not as the adviser of the institution but as the chairperson of Indonesian National Commission, We thank God that thru KNIU there are a lot of mandates that are given to Indonesia by the World. I want to see what is given to Diponegoro can give benefits to others, so that it wont be forgotten. Thus, I would like to thank Diponegoro Institute and the Coordinator of iEARN, and Schools Principles and al staffs of Diponegoro. And I thank to the participants. I understand that iEARN (International and Education Resource Network).

Diponegoro is actually one unit of all schools in the world to be able to have international network, by using instruments and mechanism that are done by the teacher to open the networks (20,000 schools in the network throughout the world). When it was first introduced, the Director General of Primary and Secondary Education asked if the SMK join the programme. Referring to the economic strata of the students, they want to develop themselves immediately. Thank God that we included into the international network.

I am happy to have a partner like Pak Imam, who is very progressive and straightforward after attending particular workshops. The financial resources of this workshop are from Diponegoro and from KNIU, there 240 schools in iEARN network in Indonesia.

These kinds of activities will issue certificates that will be undersigned by Diponegoro, KNIU and iEARN. The certificate will carry national and international standard. When you prepare for the portfolio and certification, it has to fit the standard of KNIU. The happiness of life is that when a person has increasing intelligence time after time. Learning is counties progress. Frankly speaking, to make Diponegoro as a fun High School, we emphasize to the coordination of the organizing committee members in arranging this workshop and other activities. We have to enjoy this life, as life is so short. I congratulate to the committee and thank to the facilitator, Ms. Ira.

Welcoming Speech by the Coordinator of iEARN Indonesia, Ms. Hasnah Gasim. First I would like to thank Prof. Dr. Arief and Mr. Imam, for inviting us to organize iEARN programme in Diponegoro 1 High School. We have three facilitators today, if you have further questions, you can contact them. iEARN actually start since Feb 2004. Recently, there are 1026 teachers subscribe iEARN. Last month we had an evaluation on the projects. The problems are that the facilitators are not responsive to the projects, it is because the projects are not ongoing anymore; there is no Internet access in the school. There are Internet access but its always occupied; the Internet access is very slow, and the teachers are very busy; and the language problems; the school principles and the staff do not support the programme. iEARN is collaborative programme that cannot be done by only done teacher, its supposed to be done by groups of teachers and students. In this workshop, we are going to introduce the website of iEARN provided by iEARN in the US that we can upload documents. We will also introduce how to subscribe to iEARN and how to subscribe the students (because students will do the projects and teachers facilitate them), we will also introduce PBL, by the end of today’s workshop, you have selected the projects and you will continue the projects in one week; and in the second day, you have to present your project, and it can be done in groups.

In the next workshop, we will discuss the difficulties when they are organizing the projects. We will also include them in one mailing list, so that they can share ideas, and participants have to be able to speak English. The last point, iEARN teachers can create innovative projects and can proposed that to the MGMP and if it’s accepted, the teachers will receive 1 million for the projects. One more time, I thank you for coming to the workshop and hopefully through the workshop we can get fruitful results.

Prof. Dr. Arief Rachman then introduces the facilitators and where they have gone to participate in iEARN international workshop. Ms. Hasnah Gasim, also announces that the next event will be in Uzbekistan.

Welcoming Speech by the Chairperson of the Foundation of Diponegoro Institute, Ir. Imam Parikesit welcomes Ms. Hasnah Gasim and the facilitators and the participants. Today’s workshop is actually the second workshop that we have organized, but from the numbers of the participants, only a few participants go onto the next progress to experience iEARN. And share the knowledge and experiences to other teachers. Actually, the response of participants of the workshop this time is not high because the activities of the teachers are already tight. After consulting Prof. Arief, we approached the principles to motivate the teachers to join this workshop. We will later subscribe to iEARN website. I can imagine the difficulty and the challenge of joining iEARN, but Prof Arief and Ms. Hasnah have suggested joining groups to solve he problems. For the first step, hard works are required, but those who have joined, will see the benefits. This condition I never imagined three years ago, but since Prof Arief came to our school and introduced this programme. If there is a will there is a way. Now Diponegoro Institute is going international through iEARN with our two teachers have attended iEARN events in South Korea and Egypt.

I try to adjust Prof. Arief’s vision and mission, that is way we could work together and I can work progressively. He is the role model in developing education in Indonesia. We hope that this programme certificate will help the teachers in the certification process. I also expect for the follow-up programme after this workshop; by saying Bismillahi rahmannirrohim, I officially open the workshop.

Moment of Silence, Mr. Hamdani leads the participants, praying to God and hoping for the success of the workshop to give rewarding results to the participants.

Ms. Ira says that so far iEARN does not give any scholarship, but through iEARN some teachers received study grants, for example, Ms Wati of Al Azhar received study grant for tolerance and peace study in New York for 3 months and the latest news is Mr. Rachman of Al Azhar receives a study grant for 6 months in Washington DC.

Mr. Suparno continues to explain the Forums; he then goes to link People – how to search and find people, who have registered and who have not. He also explains about the pulse of iEARN: 2.1 millions students engaging daily, 24,500 member schools and youth organizations and 120 countries. Furthermore, he explains how to register their students into the Youth Forum.

Teachers Forum – cont’d

By Mr. Suparno

Mr. Suparno continues his explanation about the Forum and gives the confirmation of the registered new members. He also checks every participant if they have successfully registered on iEARN Teachers Forum. Ms. Hasnah Gasim assists the validation of the member registration of the participants.

Furthermore, Mr. Suparno explains that if we click to a person’s name, we can see the contact details of the person and we can also upload picture into the profile page. Mr. Agus reminds the participants to use proper English when posting messages in the Forums, not using colloquial English that is commonly used in personal email or chat; and to remember the password of their iEARN accounts.

Mr. Suparno continues to explain the settings of the account; In the Account Menu, click Add Students then fill in the registration form. This process is easy because it does not need the approval of the Country Coordinator of iEARN. He also guides the participants to get into ‘Manage Account,’ where we can upload pictures into our profiles. Ms. Ira shows some profiles of other iEARN members from other countries.

Finally, Ms. Hasnah validates all participants’ online registrations. Then, Mr. Suparno explains how to search people. Both inform the participants that they can response to some particular posted messages in English; and ask the facilitators to check the grammar before the messages are posted.

Project Based Learning

By Ms. Ira Damayanti Fasa

She explains about PBL by using interactive PowerPoint presentation slides and emphasizes three points: What is PBL, Principle and Purpose of PBL and the Process of PBL. She is using audio-supported presentation slides (female voice in Indonesian language).

Everything used in PBL is a simple thing in real life, for example, the garbage problems in Jakarta that can be done in groups. This can be a collaborative project, which can be coordinated with some teachers. This should be encouraging process. More importantly, when teachers are using PBL, students are indirectly used to learn to get knowledge sources to solve problems. Thus, the source of learning does not have to be in form of books. For example, HIV/AIDS cases in Indonesia, students are encouraged to search for information from the third sources.

I remember when I was in high school, my teacher asked me to create news clipping, but happened to our clippings is nothing. So, how to make these activities useful? There are some steps that need to be considered. Students can independently learn, and they don’t have to ask to their teachers. In this case, teachers are only as facilitators or counselors when students have problems. There is one activity that counts, which is giving feedback to students’ assignments. We can underestimate our students. PBL suits the characteristics of Indonesian students nowadays. It develops to high-level thinking, educates students to be problem solvers. When students get into real life, they are prepared because they get used to it. The question is, “Is it appropriate with our education curriculum?” She then explains her collaborative project with a high school in Japan. This goes through some steps of PBL, which is Independent learning – learning process on life and carrier – teachers as tutor and facilitators – critical thinking and problem solving.

The process of PBL is identifying and collecting information, applying things that are learned and taking evaluation on oneself and others (friends). We have to ask students to get involved in a dialogue; the goal is the understanding of other cultures; including the students’ involvement in formulating evaluation form (list down the criteria of the grading). When the formulation is done, teachers can enforce the students to follow the criteria that they have made up.

Introduction and Selection of Projects

By Mr. Suparno

From the beginning we mention a lot about projects. This is the time for us to talk about projects and choose the projects. There a re a lot of projects available, but we only give 9 projects adjusted to the availability of the projects’ facilitators.

Ms. Ira shows the samples of the projects of SMAN 3 Semarang (Project Action Plan). This project is facilitated by two teachers – collaborative project. For example, one teacher works on the content development and another teacher works on the grammars. Ms. Hasnah asks the participants to divide the participants into groups.

Ms. Hanny assists the participants to group themselves according to their location to ease their project coordinations. Ms. Hasnah asks each group to come forward and explain their selected projects; the groups are SMP Diponegoro 1 (i2i project, 6 persons); SMK Diponegoro (My Name project, 6 persons); SMA Diponegoro – Science (Water Habitat project, 5 persons); SMA Diponegoro – Social Science (Teddy Bear project, 6 persons); SMA Diponegoro Cakung (Environment, 5 persons).

Ms. Hasnah explains that the groups have to start the project by this week and involve their students to work on their projects and can contact other schools in other countries. We end our workshop today and encourage all participants to be actively involved in the projects.

Prof. Dr. Arief Rachman M.Pd. First off all we would like to thank God and the prophet Muhammad. He distributes a piece of paper about life. He invites two of the school staff to join his closing speech. He says that we cannot go on alone, we always need someone: our parents, our friends, etc. What we need is 1. Religion and 2. Value System;

Our duty is to pass on our knowledge to others. Diponegoro will connect the schools with 20,000 schools throughout the world and 240 schools in Indonesia. That is the goal of life: interdependent, to work together with others. Philosophically, this workshop is doing the theory of ‘Dependent, Independent and Interdependent.’ Nobody can live by himself. Thank you very much and I wont be here next week because I will be in Senegal for ten days.

In conclusion, make a habit and do it as a culture. We open with Surah Al Fatihah and lets close with Surah Al Ashr.
